چکیده

An attenuation-correction algorithm for the SeaWinds instrument uses the AMSR brightness temperature to find the attenuation experienced by the scatterometer signal. The algorithm uses the concept of excess temperature TeXto evaluate the attenuation. The excess temperature TeXis the difference between the measured brightness temperature and the temperature of the emitting surface. ~e algorithm uses an iterative scheme. Simulation results show obvious improvement on the scatterometer measurements.

Improved Hurricane Wind Speed Algorithm for the SeaWinds Satellite Scatterometer

Abszracl-Satellite microwave scatterometer wind retrievals, given in the standard product (e.g., QuikSCAT LZB), badly underestimate the peak wind speed in tropical cyclones. One important reason is that the effects of precipitation on the normalized radar cross section sigma-0 are neglected in the processing algorithms. This paper presents results of a first attempt to provide sigma-0 correctio...

Simulation of SeaWinds Measurements in the Presence of Rain Using Collocated TRMM PR Data

The scatterometer SeaWinds on QuikSCAT measures ocean winds via the relationship between the wind and the normalized radar backscatter cross-section (σ◦) from the ocean surface. Scattering and attenuation from falling rain droplets along with ocean surface perturbations due to rain change the backscatter signature of the waves induced by near-surface winds. A simple model incorporates the effec...

Improved resolution backscatter measurements with the SeaWinds pencil-beam scatterometer

The SeaWinds scatterometer was launched on the NASA QuikSCAT spacecraft in June 1999 and is planned for the Japanese ADEOS-II mission in 2000. In addition to generating a global Ku-band backscatter data set useful for a variety of climate studies, these flights will provide ocean-surface wind estimates for use in operational weather forecasting. SeaWinds employs a compact “pencil-beam” design r...

Study of Iceberg BlOA using Scatterometer Data

The Antarctic continent continually releases glacial ice into the ocean in the form of icebergs calving from glaciers and ice shelves. Microwave scatterometers can provide useful information about the spatial and temporal behavior of large icebergs. In this paper, results from the observation of BlOA during 1992-2000, using ERS-1/2 AMI Scatterometer (ESCAT), NASA Scatterometer (NSCAT) and SeaWi...

Combined Active/Passive Hurricane Wind Retrieval Algorithm for the Seawinds Scatterometer

Because of their high wind gradient structures, tropical cyclones (TC’s) present a major challenge to space-borne scatterometer measurements of ocean surface wind vectors. Frequently spiral bands of strong rains accompany the high winds, and this precipitation attenuates the ocean backscatter due to wind. Also scattering by the rain volume increases the backscatter measured by the scatterometer...
